About this deal

In ideal circumstances you’re not so much sacrificing the social side of the game as you are boiling it until the lid blasts off and kills someone. There’s a sticker that goes on both sides of the timer, as well, but you don’t have to do that, yet, unless you want to be thorough. Guard room: if a Hero an a Guard are (by mistake) on the same tile, the hero gets caught and must be freed.

You may lightly place the pawn when you need someone to get to something but not necessarily immediately. It seems like I’m waiting for the one game that melts away my cold outer shell and replaces it with a warm sense of love and wonderment.

I generally kind of like games with timers — it’s stressful, sure, but it makes it kind of thrilling, as well. It’s super fun to flip tiles and build a wildly different mall each time — means you’ll never play the same two games, especially once you start adding weird extra scenarios or including promo tiles or whatever you feel is best. The tricky thing is that each player must form their own plan, and there’s not really a way to get everyone on the same page. You don’t waste an evening because of a crossed wire – if anything you make the game evening better because while Magic Maze does offer a satisfying puzzle it’s really just an engine for making people laugh.

Once you solve the puzzle you can move on to harder pastures, but the reality is that this is a puzzle that feels quite similar each time you play it no matter the level of difficulty – adding 5 tiles just doesn’t add much more. The timer provides another fun wrinkle to the game: players are allowed to talk freely whenever the timer is flipped. It’s not all bad though – a few tiles in the maze are hourglass spaces and they let you flip the hourglass so that it starts flowing the other way. All in all I’d say this is a 5/5 Co-op game for ages 8+ the hardest part is remembering to only do your own actions! These scenarios will keep the game fresh, especially as players become accustomed to what they need to do. As a player, you own a directional card, giving you the power to move any of the characters in that direction. Games, provides an interesting glance on the fantasy world as you take on the roles of four Heroes’ with a not so heroic quest. There’s a sense of cleverness that you feel in overcoming the traps someone puts in front of you by virtue of their intentional obscurity.
