The pale cream turning buff brown with age, the caps on these mushrooms can be very large up to 20cm in diameter, they are depressed with an umbo (small lump) in the centre. This umbo is one of the key features to tell it apart from some of the other funnels. In this case (typical for a funnel mushroom) the white/whitish-buff gills run decurrently down the stem (which share the same colour as the cap). They are quite crowded and turn more buff coloured as the fungi ages. The Fool’s Funnel ( Clitocybe rivulosa aka C.dealbata) is one of the more common poisonous species to be found in the UK, as well as in Europe and North America. It appears, alarmingly enough, in some very ‘people orientated’ places such as lawns, parks, road sides etc; in sandy soil, during late summer to late autumn. The stem of a trooping funnel is incredibly tough and fibrous, they’re quite hard to break. The base is swollen and can be woolly around the bottom. Similar colour to the cap and gills,Colour: Does it share the same colour (concolourous) as the cap or is it different? Are there coloured streaks? Does the colour differ at the base in relation nearer the apex (just before joining the cap)? A substantial mushroom that can often be found in large troops or rings, they are edible for most but cause gastric upset in some.
